Spain floods: Raging torrents hit cities sparking power cuts – two dead as car submerged | World | News

Their bodies were found inside their overturned vehicle as torrents of water flooded local roads in the Albacete town of Caudete. Torrential rain and strong winds have hit a vast area of the Spanish mainland, including Valencia and Alicante, as well as Mallorca and Ibiza, leading to hundreds of incidents and extensive damage.

The two people who drowned in their car were originally thought to be a married couple but were in fact siblings.

Firefighters and the police recovered their bodies after having to wait for two and a half hours before the water subsided.

The car was on the road to Fuente la Higuera in Albacete. The brother and sister lived in Caudete.

A fire service spokesman confirmed their car had been dragged away by the strong currents and overturned, trapping them inside.

President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page expressed his sorrow at the tragedy, saying on Twitter: “We are with their family.”

His condolences were echoed by Spain’s president Pedro Sánchez.

Thirteen other people were rescued in the same area, including an elderly couple who were evacuated by helicopter from the roof of their house which was flooded.

The flooding was sparked by a cold snap which brought heavy rain to Spain.

Dozens of people have been evacuated from the Valencia region after two rivers burst their banks.

Schools have also been shut and many areas have been hit by power cuts.

Meanwhile, the Balearics is on red alert because of a tornado about to hit the islands of Majorca and Ibiza.
