Next Gen stars slammed by Rafael Nadal uncle for lacking Federer and Djokovic effort | Tennis | Sport

Toni Nadal has slammed the Next Gen stars for not having the effort Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic did at a young age.

A number of youngsters have shown positive signs when taking on the top three players in the world but their lights have often dimmed very quickly.

Alexander Zverev rose the prominence very early in his career but he has struggled this season. Stefanos Tsitsipas has also crashed in the second half of the campaign.

It is often thought men’s tennis will not get any new leaders until Federer, Nadal and Djokovic retire.

But Nadal’s uncle Toni believes it is not skill which the younger players are missing.

“I am critical of Next Gen,” Toni Nadal told Gazetta dello Sport.

“Some young guys do not have his desire to win. What a motivation to pursue Federer’s slams.

“We talk many times about the fact that they are young, that they have to wait, that they are 23 years old and the other 21.

“But Rafael at 19 was already at the top, Djokovic at the age of 21 won the Australian Open. And we can add many more, from [Pete] Sampras to Roger.

“In general, I say that at 20 years old tennis players were more mature than now.”

However, 23-year-old Daniil Medvedev has shown incredible consistency over the summer as he reached four consecutive finals.

The Russian won the Cincinnati Masters title and lost to Rafael Nadal in the US Open final.

Toni Nadal added: “Medvedev, however, seems to me to be willing to do anything to reach the top, with the right will.

“Daniil is a very serious boy with a great tennis level.

“He has been the best of the Next Gen in this US Open 2019 and throughout the summer, getting to face the best players in the circuit. I have been looking forward to being able to surprise, win a Grand Slam and thus be able to put pressure on those in front of him.

“I consider him a very complete tennis player, with a lot of control in the game and able to beat any tennis player.

“In recent years it has been said that Zverev was the tennis player destined to win Grand Slams in the future, but it seems that everything has changed with the arrival of this type of tennis player.”
