Naomi Osaka sacks second coach of the year after US Open disappointment | Tennis | Sport

Naomi Osaka has announced she has split with coach Jermaine Jenkins.

The world No 4 began working with Jenkins in February after parting ways with Sascha Bajin just weeks following her win at the Australian Open.

Since then Osaka’s form has fluctuated and at the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open, the Japanese star was unable to defend her title, losing to Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.

And the 21-year-old has decided to act swiftly and dismissed Jenkins ahead of the Asia hard-court swing.

“I’m super grateful for the time we spent together and the things I learned on and off the court but I feel like now is (an) appropriate time for a change,” Osaka said in a statement on Twitter.

“Thank you for everything, it was a blast.”

In a post on Instagram of the pair with Osaka’s fitness coach Abdul Sillah, Jenkins wrote: “Thanks so much for the opportunity Naomi! It’s been great getting to know you as a human and tennis player.

“Super grateful for our time together. Wishing you and the team all the best! See you soon!”

Speaking after losing at the US Open to Bencic, Osaka said she wasn’t mad to exit the tournament.

“Honestly, I’m not that mad at this,” he said.

“Like, everyone that’s not new to me knows that, like, until I won here last year, I was, like, constantly around 3 person, you know.

“So of course I can look at this and be very disappointed and mad, but I feel like — like, I’m not mad at it.

“Of course I would like to reach higher, like, rounds. That’s definitely what I’ll aim for in Australia.

“But for right now, I think the level of tennis that I was playing in Europe was terrible — that’s kind of mean. Was not that great.

“Yeah, just coming here, two quarterfinals, round of 16.

“Hopefully I’ll do well in Japan because I always do well in Japan, and just keep building off of it to end the season.”
