Carlos Moya reveals why US Open win was Rafael Nadal’s most significant result of 2019 | Tennis | Sport

Carlos Moya has lavished praise on Rafael Nadal for coming through “difficult circumstances” to win the US Open.

Leading by two sets and a break in the third set over Daniil Medvedev, Nadal looked on course to ease towards a fourth title at Flushing Meadows.

But after breaking back, Medvedev began a dramatic fightback, winning the third and fourth sets 7-5 and 6-4 and taking the match into a fifth set decider.

However, Nadal gathered himself again to lead 5-2 and despite being broken when serving for the match, he got the job done to win 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4.

It capped a strong year at the Grand Slams for Nadal with a runners-up finish at the Australian Open, a 12th French Open title and a semi-final exit to Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

Speaking in an interview with the ATP, Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya opened up about seeing his man create history again.

“You don’t know how many opportunities like those he’ll have. Rafa is always seeking them out, though, and he tries to make the most of them at this point in his career,” said Moya.

“But it’s clear that losing a Grand Slam final hurts.

“It’s amazing what Rafa has achieved. He’s won majors in three sets. He’s lost them in five.

“But he’s always right there battling until the end, and he has this uncanny ability to pull through in difficult circumstances. He’s proven that once again.

“In terms of excitement and emotion, it’s Rafa’s biggest victory since I joined his team.

“The last four Grand Slam finals that I’ve been a part of, some were difficult to endure and others, not as much so.

“But this is definitely the most significant, especially when you take into consideration factors like the speed of the surface.”

After his victory, Nadal was shown a montage of his 19 Grand Slam wins and the Spaniard couldn’t hide his emotions as he teared up at the footage.

He said: “Well, we are getting old. In some way that’s good. See all the things I went through, be able to still being here is so special for me.

“I went through some tough moments, physically especially. When you have physical issues, then mentally things became much more difficult, no?

“The emotions have been there watching all the success, all the moments that came to my mind in that moment. Yeah, I tried to hold the emotion, but some moments was impossible.”
